I’m hacking away at it, but clearly I’m not getting what part of what answers should be altered. Is there an answer key?
Clue C has only one square. If you get clue C, you’re likely to get the trick. 12 across is also a good place to start, as is 20 down.
That said, I think a few of them used information that was provided inside Helen’s lab notebook in the stack itself, or in other places in the stack.
Also, 29 across is really absolutely unfair – several are, I think.
@Kay: If all else fails, there are some hints (that the original participants had) and a solution grid in the archives of the original run of the strip. When you find it, though, do not click on the solution. You have been warned.
